HAYS, Kan. — Cort Lesmeister pitched six effective innings and Pittsburg State University pounded out 11 hits to claim a 7-3 victory over Fort Hays Sate University in the season finale Sunday (Feb. 23).
The Gorillas (3-4, 2-2 MIAA) built a 3-0 lead against the Tigers (3-4, 2-2 MIAA) and then held off FHSU in the late innings to force a split in the four-game series between the schools.
Kyle Dickens belted a pair of home runs – a solo shot as well as a two-run blast in the ninth inning to cap the scoring. Sam Falcon also went 2-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI.
Lesmeister (1-0) walked three batters and registered four strikeouts in six innings of work. He allowed two runs on five hits. Ryan McKay earned the save by getting the final seven outs of the contest.
Pitt State will return to action by making the Gorillas' home debut in a four-game MIAA series against Emporia State. The Gorillas and Hornets will open with a single game Friday at 4 p.m. (CST), then play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday (Mar. 1) and a final game at 1 p.m. Sunday (Mar. 2) at Al Ortolani Field.
