PITTSBURG — Cody Ball hit a walkoff home run on the first pitch of the seventh inning to give Pittsburg State University a 2-1 victory over Emporia State University in game one of an MIAA doubleheader Thursday (Feb. 27) at Al Ortolani Field. The Hornets countered with a 10-0 win over the Gorillas in the nightcap.

Pitt State's Tyler Thompson (1-2) outdueled ESU's Shawn Talkington (1-1) in a brisk-paced 97-minute affair.

The Gorillas (4-5, 3-3 MIAA) got on the board first in the second inning on Spencer Booe's RBI single. The Hornets (6-4, 3-3 MIAA) tied the game in the fifth with an unearned run thanks to a passed ball and a bunt single.

Ball went 3-for-3 with two runs scored in the contest.

Thompson scattered four hits and a walk while fanning six batters.

In game two, ESU used a trio of big innings to roll past Pitt State. The Hornets plated three runs in the second, four runs in the third and three more runs in the eighth inning.

Justin Harris went 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Levi Parker drove in three runs, including a two-run homer in the eighth. Deal Long also belted a solo homer in the eighth for the Hornets.

Pitt State collected eight hits in the contest, but the Gorillas stranded 10 baserunners.

Jarrod Miller (1-1), Cory Sager and Connor Sjolander combined on the shutout.

The Gorillas and Hornets will wrap up their four-game series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Friday (Feb. 28).
