PITTSBURG — Brad Foss drove a two-one pitch over the left field wall for a one-out walkoff home run to lift the Pittsburg State University baseball team to a 7-6 victory over Emporia State University Friday (Feb. 28).

Foss' shot helped the Gorillas (5-6, 4-4 MIAA) salvage a split in an MIAA doubleheader against the Hornets (7-5, 4-4 MIAA). Dean Long hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh inning in game one that lifted ESU to a 6-5 victory.

In the nightcap, Spencer Booe singled in Evan Thomas with the tying run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Thomas reached on a two-base fielding error by centerfielder Justin Harris.

The Hornets led 3-0 in the game, before the Gorillas plated a run in the fourth and three more in the sixth to take a 4-3 lead. ESU countered with a three-run seventh inning to push back in front 6-4.

Derek Hackney was hit by pitch and eventually scored on a balk in the seventh inning to get Pitt State within a run at 6-5.

Ryan McKay (1-1), who took the loss in the opener Friday, worked 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory in the nightcap.

Foss went 4-for-5 with two runs scored.

In game one, the Hornets grabbed leads of 2-0 and 5-1 against the Gorillas, before Pitt State got two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5.

Thomas had a two-run single in the fourth to score Cody Ball and Kyle Dickens. Dicken followed with a two-run single in the fifth inning to knot the score.

Long, who went 2-for-3 to pace ESU's nine-hit attack, jumped on McKay's one-out offering in the top of the seventh.

The Gorillas will return to action on Mar. 5 when they travel to Springfield, Mo., to face Drury University in a single game beginning at 2 p.m. (CST).
