PITTSBURG – The Pittsburg State University baseball team split a pair of games with Northeastern State University Friday (Mar. 14) at Al Ortolani Field.
 
The Gorillas got a complete-game three-hit shutout from starter Tyler Thompson in a 4-0 victory in the opener, but the RiverHawks countered with a 16-hit attack in a 10-4 victory in the nightcap.
 
Pitt State (6-12, 5-9 MIAA) and NSU (9-11, 6-8 MIAA) will wrap up the four-game series with a 1 p.m. (CDT) doubleheader Saturday (Mar. 15).
 
Thompson (2-3) walked none and fanned 10 batters in the seven-inning game.
 
The Gorillas jumped on NSU starter Clay Debban (0-1), plating three runs in the first on a pair of walks and three hits in the frame.
 
Cody Ball added a solo home run – his fourth of the season – in the third inning. Ball went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the contest.
 
In the nightcap, the RiverHawks struck early against Pitt State starter George Brandecker (0-4), plating three runs in the first and two more in the second en route to building a 5-2 lead after two innings and an 8-4 advantage after three.
 
Matt Standlee pitched 6 1/3 innings of relief allowing just two runs to slow down the NSU scoring.
 
Ball continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and two RBIs.
