PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team took the weekend series from Northeastern State University with a pair of wins Saturday (Mar. 15) at Al Ortolani Field.

The Gorillas rode a pair of solid starts from Nate Arnold and Cort Lesmeister to claim 7-3 and 6-3 victories over the RiverHawks. Pitt State improved to 8-12 overall and 7-9 in MIAA play with the wins, while NSU dropped to 9-13 and 6-10 (MIAA).

Arnold (3-1) scattered six hits in six innings of work while fanning six batters. He surrendered a run in the first inning, but the Gorillas countered with a run in their half of the second and three more in the third inning to take control. Pitt State stretched its lead to 7-1 in the fifth.

Cody Ball went 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Kyle DIckens had a pair of RBIs in the contest.

In the nightcap, Lesmeister (2-1) allowed just one unearned run in six innings of work. He exited with a 2-1 lead and recorded six strikeouts in his outing.

The Gorillas got a run in the seventh inning for a 3-1 lead then tacked on three more insurance runs for a 6-2 margin going to the ninth.

Ryan McKay worked the final three innings in relief to pick up his second save of the year.

Dickens had two RBIs in the game and Luke Bordewick went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Pitt State will continue a 10-game homestand Wednesday (Mar. 19) when the Gorillas host Drury University in a single game at 3 p.m. (CDT).
