ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- Lindenwood University scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to break open a 4-2 game and then held on for a 9-8 victory over Pittsburg State University to complete a four-game series sweep Sunday (Mar. 30).

The Lions (14-17, 11-9 MIAA) pounded out 12 hits in the contest against the Gorillas (13-17, 10-14 MIAA). LWU also benefited from three Pitt State errors to score five unearned runs in the contest.

The Gorillas tried to rally from the 9-2 deficit by scoring six runs in the top of the eighth. Evan Thomas was hit by pitch with the bases loaded to start the rally. Kyle Dickens and Luke Bordewick followed with RBI singles. Andrew Kreiling was hit by pitch with the bases loaded and Derek Hackney added a sacrifice fly. Aaron Boucher followed with an RBI single, but Kreiling was ultimately tagged out of the play to end the threat.

Pitt State got a leadoff double from Brad Foss in the ninth but reliever Wade Rothermich recorded a pair of strikeouts with a fielder's choice sandwiched in between to end the game.

The Gorillas will return to action Wednesday (Apr. 2) when Pitt State hosts Missouri Southern in a non-conference game at 6 p.m. (CDT) at Al Ortolani Field.
