JOPLIN, Mo. -- Missouri Southern State University plated three runs in the sixth inning to overcome a 2-0 deficit against Pittsburg State University en route to a 6-4 win Tuesday (Apr. 15).

The Lions (22-19) added three insurance runs in the seventh inning to build a 6-2 advantage against the Gorillas (15-27) before an announced crowd of 767 fans at Joe Becker Stadium.

Pitt State, which was limited to three hits through the first seven innings, trimmed the margin to 6-4 thanks to RBI singles by Cody Ball and Nate Arnold in the eighth inning, but the Gorillas could not complete the late-inning rally.

MSSU's Stephen Vaughn recorded the final five outs, including a pair of strikeouts with runners on base in the eigth, to lock down his sixth save of the season and preserve the non-conference win.

Derek Hackney reached on a fielding error and scored on an Arnold single to give Pitt State a 1-0 lead in the first. Luke Bordewick also reached on an error to open the second frame and scored on a balk by MSSU starter Skylar Hill (4-1).

Dustin Ulrich allowed just two MSSU hits through the first five innings, before getting touched for a pair of runs in the sixth. Cameron Fisher (1-2) issued a walk and two base hits in the frame as well as the Lions pushed in front, 3-2.

Arnold led the Pitt State offense, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Gorillas will return to Al Ortolani Field Thursday (Apr. 17) to open a four-game MIAA series with the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
