PITTSBURG -- Brad Foss delivered a one-out walkoff single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift Pittsburg State University to a 6-5 win over the University of Nebraska-Kearney in the opening game of a four-game series Thursday (Apr. 17) at Al Ortolani Field.

The Gorillas (16-27, 11-22 MIAA), who snapped a 12-game conference losing streak, took a 5-4 lead to the ninth inning against the Lopers (24-16, 18-15 MIAA), but UNK broke up starter Tyler Thompson's bid for a complete-game win by plating a run to force extra innings.

Ryan McKay (3-3) got the final five outs for the Gorillas after Jayke Brock singled home Alex Pacheco with the tying run with one out in the ninth.

After failing to score in the ninth, Sam Falcon led off the home half of the 10th inning with a single to center field. Andrew Kreiling struck out fouling a two-strike pitch while trying to bunt Falcon to second, but Derek Hackney followed with a base hit and Foss pushed the ball through the right side of the infield for the game winner against reliever Joe Smidt (2-3).

Foss, who went 2-for-5 in the contest, also had an RBI double in the fifth inning as Pitt State rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to eventually go in front, 5-4, thanks to a three-run sixth. Nate Arnold's RBI single capped the sixth inning scoring and gave the Gorillas the lead.

Thompson shook off a three-run third inning to scatter eight hits and five walks in 8 1/3 innings while fanning 11 Loper batters.

Pitt State and UNK will resume the series with a 3 p.m. doubleheader Friday.
