Lopers Sweep Twinbill From Gorillas Friday

PITTSBURG – The University of Nebraska-Kearney swept a doubleheader from Pittsburg State University Friday (Apr. 18) at Al Ortolani Field.
 
The Lopers (26-16, 20-15 MIAA) used a four-run fourth inning in game one to take a 6-3 win and UNK utilized a three-run fifth inning in a 4-1 victory in the nightcap against the Gorillas (16-29, 11-24 MIAA).
 
The two teams will complete their four-game MIAA series with a final game at 12 Noon Saturday.
 
Spencer Booe had an RBI triple Mitch Streeter followed with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning of game one as the Gorillas cut a 4-0 deficit in half
 
Jacoby Martin added a run-scoring single in the sixth for Pitt State's final run.
 
In the nightcap, the Lopers and Gorillas traded runs in the first inning before starters Logan Willard and James Fitzgearlds settled into a pitcher's duel.
 
UNK finally broke through with three runs on three hits in the fifth.
 
Willard (5-0) limited the Gorillas to six hits in the contest, walking three and fanning five batters. He exited the game with two outs and two runners on in the seventh inning. Joe Smidt got Foss to fly out to right field for the final out, registering his ninth save of the season.
 
Cody Ball plated Pitt State's only run with an RBI triple after Brad Foss walked with three outs in the home half of the first.
