Season StatsMARYVILLE, Mo. — The Pittsburg State University baseball team swept an MIAA doubleheader from Northwest Missouri State University Friday (Apr. 25) at Bearcat Field. The Gorillas claimed 5-2 and 4-3 wins over the Bearcats.
Tyler Thompson (5-5) went the distance in a complete-game victory in game one. The Gorillas (18-30, 15-25 MIAA) overcame an early 2-0 deficit with a four-run fifth inning. Brad Foss had a two-run single as part of the big inning for Pitt State.
In game two, James Fitzgearlds (1-2) scattered 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work to earn the win. Aaron Snow induced a double play after Fitzgearlds exited with runners on base, and Ryan McKay recorded the final six outs for his sixth save of the season.
The Gorillas broke open a 2-1 game with a two-run seventh inning against the Bearcats (21-22, 15-20 MIAA). Arnold, who went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the game, singled home a run and Foss added a successful squeeze bunt for a run.
Thompson allowed five hits and one earned run, walking four and striking out six batters.
The Gorillas and Bearcats will complete the series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.
