PITTSBURG, Kan. -- This five set match ended in a win for the Pitt State Volleyball team (5-9, 2-4 MIAA), as the Gorillas beat Fort Hays State (7-7, 2-4 MIAA), 3-2, at John Lance Arena on Saturday evening. It was the third consecutive five set match for the Gorillas and the ninth of the season.
Fort Hays State won the first set, 25-22. Pitt State came back to win two and three, 25-18 and 25-20. The Tiger took set four, 25-20. Pitt State got behind to start the fifth set, 5-2, but went on a 6-0 run to push the eighth point and switch sides of the court. The home team never lost the lead after that and won the fifth set, 15-10.
The Gorillas hit .255 for the match and hit at better than a .300 clip in four of the five sets. The Gorillas outblocked the Tigers, 10.0 to 8.0. The Gorillas tallied 10 more digs and 11 more kills in the match as well.
Paula Okrutna and Madi Mosier each tallied 20-plus kills for Pitt State, along with four blocks, with Mosier leading with 21 and Okrutna adding 20. Mosier tallied a double-double as she also recorded 16 digs. Hayley Hansford also had a double-double with 63 assists and 13 digs. Ary Crittleton added 17 kills. Ashlen Schwartz led the team with 21 digs. Aimee Wood and Taylor Wright each added 11 kills.
Next weekend, the Gorillas travel to Northwest Missouri State on Friday and Missouri Western on Saturday.
