BOLIVAR, Mo. -- Pittsburg State senior Lizzy Jeronimus set the new Pittsburg State scoring record as she grabbed a defensive rebound and drove the length of the court for her 18th point of the game and the 2,048th of her career. She bested the record of 2,046 set by Leslie Dudley from 1997-2000.
Jeronimus finished the game with 20 points to lead the Gorillas to a 81-58 win over Southwest Baptist on Saturday (January 31). It was the Gorillas 20th win of the season. It was the third time in four years the Gorillas have put together 20-win seasons and only the second time in school history the program has put together back-to-back 20-win seasons.
Three additional players scored in double figures for the Gorillas. Kylie Gafford added 13 points, 11 of them coming in the second half. Morgan Westhoff and Cathy Brugman came off then bench to score 12 and 11, respectively. Jeronimus also led the Gorillas with eight rebounds.
Pitt State shot only .333 from the floor in the first half, but got fired up in the second half for a 65.2 percent shooting percentage. They also outrebounded the Bearcats, 43-32.
The Gorillas led 35-21 at the half. The team then started the second half with a 10-0 run and did not allow SBU to score until the 16:17 mark on free throws by Alex Botkin. The Bearcats didn't make their first shot from the floor in the second half until the 15:55 mark. Pitt State led by a high of 30, 58-28 on free throws by Mikaela Burgess.
Pitt State will have the next midweek off. The team will travel to Edmond, Okla. for a 1:30 p.m. game against Central Oklahoma on Saturday,Feb. 7.
