Jets Defeat Gorillas, 98-89


WICHITA, Kan. -- Newman University's starting five all scored in double figures as the host Jets defeated Pittsburg State University, 98-89, Tuesday (Nov. 17).

The Jets (3-0) got a game-high 24 points from James Pegues, while Jarvis Williams added 18 points and Jalen Love chipped in with 17. Newman made 11 of 20 3-point field goals in the contest and the Jets converted 33 of 39 free throw attempts.

The Gorillas (2-1) got a team-leading 19 points from Lamine Dieng, who posted a double double with a game-high 13 rebounds as well. Trey Starks (15), Chris Owens (13), Dakota Jones (11), Javis Flynn (11) and Josiah Gustafson (11) also scored in double figures.

Pitt State shot 48.6 percent from the field (35-72), making eight more field goals than Newman. The Gorillas converted just 14 of 28 free throws as the Jets outscored Pitt State by 19 points at the charity stripe.

The Gorillas will return to action Thursday (Nov. 19) when they make their home debut against William Jewell College. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. at John Lance Arena.
