Women's Basketball Adds Win at Northwest Missouri

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The Pitt State women's basketball team earned a 72-56 win over Northwest Missouri in Bearcat Arena on Sunday (Dec. 13) afternoon.

Mikaela Burgess led all players with 19 points, including four threes. Cathy Brugman added 16 points, 10 of which were scored in the first quarter. Kylie Gafford added 12 points and pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for a double-double, her second of the season. She also had a season high five blocks and added two assists and two steals. Hadyn Herlocker led Pitt State with six assists, while Paige Imhoff added four.

Pitt State had 19 assists on its 25 made shots. The team committed only 13 fouls and sent the opponent to the line only 10 times. The team also took care of the ball well, committing only nine turnovers, compared to 17 for the Bearcats. Pitt State score 18 points off Bearcat turnovers. The Gorillas also outrebounded the home team, 41-33, and had 13 offensive rebounds, accounting for 11 second chance points.

Northwest kept the Gorillas close in the first quarter until the Gorillas started a 12-0 run that started in the last minute of the first quarter and extended into the first two minutes of the second quarter. That run to the game from an even score to a 25-13 Gorilla lead.

The Bearcats were able to cut the lead back to single digits mid-second quarter, but a three-point play by Gafford and a Burgess layup gave the Gorillas a 37-24, 13-point lead, their largest lead of the first half.

Pitt State started the second half strong. The team built up to a 19-point lead on a Gafford layup with 6:45 to go in the third. The Gorillas didn't allow consecutive Bearcats points until just over a minute remaining in the third.

Northwest went on a little run to start the fourth quarter and was able to cut Pitt State's lead to 10 with seven minutes left in the game. The Gorillas answered with an 8-0 run that included threes by Burgess and Shelby Lopez to go up by 18 again, 72-54.

Pitt State returns home tomorrow night (December 14) for a 7 p.m. non-conference game against Northwestern Oklahoma.
