JOPLIN, Mo. — The Pittsburg State University baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader against MIAA rival Missouri Southern State University Wednesday (Apr. 22) at Warren Turner Field. The Gorillas dropped a 5-3 decision in game one, before claiming a 6-3 victory in the night cap.
In game two, six pitchers combined to limit the Lions to four hits with Drake Hermann (4-0) striking out five of the final six outs to earn the victory.
Jack Mercer drew a bases loaded walk as part of a three-run second inning for Pitt State and he added a two-run homer in the fourth for the Gorillas. Andrew Kreiling also added a two-run single in the second.
The Lions struck for three runs in the first inning of game one, erasing an early 1-0 deficit to take the lead against Pitt State. Nate Arnold and Christian Arnold each went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
The Gorillas are now 17-26 on the series heading into the regular season's final weekend series against Emporia State University that begins Friday. The Lions are now 33-10 overall.
