Box Score SAN JUAN, P.R. -- The Pittsburg State women's basketball team improved to 5-0 on the season with a 64-44 win over Pontifical Catholic to start the Puerto Rico Challenge on Wednesday (November 23).Â
Many of the team's younger players got good playing time, as everyone saw court time and no one scored in double figures for the Gorillas. Madison Northcutt led the team with nine points and nine rebounds, just short of a double-double. Shelby Lopez added another nine points and six rebounds. Lopez made three threes to lead the team. Athena Alvarado added eight points and senior Hadyn Herlocker also had eight points and led the team with seven assists.Â
Pitt State shot 34 percent from the floor overall and 26.5 percent from three-point range. Pontifical Catholic shot 34 percent overall and only 18 percent from long range.Â
The Gorillas outscored the Puerto Rican team 18-7 in the first quarter, but had a 15-14 deficit in the second quarter. Pitt State's defense held its opponent to single digits again in the third quarter, 16-9, before a 16-13 fourth.Â
The Gorillas will play at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving morning against West Alabama.Â
