BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- The Pitt State softball team split to shut out games on Friday (Feb. 12) in the 8 State Classic to move to 6-1 on the season. The Gorillas lost the first game of the day, 10-0, in five innings to Upper Iowa, but finished the day with a 4-0 win over Drury.
Against Drury, the Gorillas scored four runs on six hits, while Gorilla pitcher Emmie Robertson and the Pitt State defense only gave up one hit and allowed only three Panther base runners.Â
Robertson finished the game with seven strikeouts and one walk.
Jenna Bolton led the Pitt State offensive attack with a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI and a run. Katy Remy, Nicole Nease, Kylie Guthier and Alex Perez had the other four Pitt State hits from the middle of the line up.
Bolton got the Gorillas started in the fifth with a one-out base hit. She advanced to second on a throw and moved to third on a Catie Cummins ground out. Bolton came home on a wild pitch to score the first run of the day for the Gorillas.Â
Remy started a two out rally for Pitt State in the bottom of the sixth with a base hit up the middle. Nease followed with an RBI double, scoring Remy all the way from first. Guthier continued the rally with a bsaae hit and Perez drew a walk to load the bases. Sierra Hall came in to pinch run for Guthier at second. Bolton grabbed her second hit in as many innings, this time a ground rule double to bring home to more runs for the final 4-0 score.Â
The first game did not go as well for the Gorillas, as they suffered a 10-0, run rule loss to Upper Iowa. TheÂ
The Peacocks scored their 10 runs on nine hits. The Gorillas only managed three hits.
Upper Iowa scored one run in the first and six in the second. The final three runs came in the fourth.
Pitt State starting pitcher Morgan Myers was replaced by Lynsey Conner with two outs in the second. Myers gave up seven runs on six hits. She walked three and struck out two. Conner pitcher 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on three hits. She walked three and struck out three.
The Gorillas return to action on Saturday with Southern Nazarene at 11 a.m. on Field 8 and Henderson State on Field 6 at 1 p.m.
