Softball Splits Again in 8 State Classic

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- The Pittsburg State softball team added a win and a loss in the second day of the 8 State Classic. The Gorillas lost the first game, 5-2, to Southern Nazarene, before defeating Henderson State, 4-3. The Gorillas are now 7-2 on the season.

All of Sunday's games in the 8 State Classic have been cancelled due to the projected poor weather coming on Sunday.

The Pitt State offense was rather sluggish in the first game, against Southern Nazarene. The team had only three hits in the game, from Catie Cummins, Katy Remy and Alex Perez. Remy had both of the team's RBI on a two run home run.

Southern Nazarene scored all five of its runs in the top of the fifth on three hits and two hit batters. 

Pitt State's runs came in the bottom of the sixth. Ashton Pratt was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. With one out, Remy hit her first home run of the season to make the score 5-2. 

Emmie Robertson took the loss for the Gorillas. She pitched 4.2 innings and gave up four runs, all earned. She struck out five, walked one and hit three. Morgan Myers pitched the remaining 2.1 innings. She gave up only two hits and one run. She struck out one batter and walked two.

The Gorilla bats started to wake up against Henderson State. The team scored four runs on eight hits and three Reddie errors. Sierra Hall and Tiara Ewy each had two hits. Kylie Guthier had the team's only RBI

Henderson State scored its three runs on four hits. The Reddies did not have a hit until the bottom of the seventh. 

Ewy started the top of the third for the Gorillas with a base hit down the left field line. She stole second and advanced to third on a Kris Van Hoosen base hit through the right side. With runners at first and third, Van Hoosen went to steal second, but the catcher's throw was off the mark, allowing Ewy to score from third for a 1-0 lead. 

Pitt State's remaining three runs scored in the fourth. remy started the inning with a base hit. Nicole Nease followed with a double to left. Andie Cumbie came in to pinch run for Nease. Kylie Guthier dropped a beautiful squeeze bunt right infront of the plate, allowing Cumbie to come in and score, a throw to third to get Remy missed and allowed her to score and left Guthier safe at second. With one out, Ewy knocked a base hit to center to move Guthier to third. Catie Cummins struck out, but the Henderson catcher dropped the ball so she ran to third. Ewy started to second, but got caught in a run down, allowing Guthier to score from third for the final Pitt State run of the game. 

Henderson State got its first hit wieth one out in the bottom of the seventh, a double. They immediately followed that with a home run to cut the Gorilla lead to 4-2. A walk followed, then back-to-back two-out base hits for the final 4-3 score.

Robertson struck out 11 in the win.
