WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- Dakota Jones and Trey Starks combined to hit 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions in the game's final 2:41 to help propel the Pittsburg State University men's basketball team to a 74-72 victory over the University of Central Missouri Wednesday (Feb. 17) at the UCM Multipurpose Building.
Jones, a Warrensburg native, buried a triple to tie the game at 63-63 with 2:41 to play. The Mules (13-12, 7-12 MIAA) went back in front 65-63 on a jumper by D'Marnier Cunningham, but Starks countered with a 3-pointer to put the Gorillas (15-11, 10-10 MIAA) back in front 66-65 with 1:42 to go.
Cunningham missed a long 3-pointer with 1:15 remaining and Jones hit another 3-pointer to stake Pitt State to a 69-65 lead with 45 seconds to play.
UCM's Marquiez Lawrence made a driving basket to narrow the lead to 69-67 for 32 ticks left, but Josiah Gustafson and Denton Hays both made a pair of free throws in back-to-back trips to the foul line as the Gorillas held on late.
Jones and Starks led the Gorillas with 19 points apiece, while Jaxon Holden chipped in with 10 points.
The Gorillas snapped a 10-game losing streak against the Mules in the UCM Multipurpose Building.
Spencer Reaves scored a game-high 33 points for UCM.
Pitt State will travel to Bolivar, Mo., Saturday (Feb. 20) to take on Southwest Baptist University at 3:30 p.m.
