PITTSBURG — The University of Sioux Falls baseball team jumped out to early leads in both contests Sunday (Feb. 7) as the visiting Cougars swept a doubleheader from Pittsburg State University, 16-13 and 12-9.
In the opening game, USF (2-2) plated 10 runs in the second inning against Pitt State (2-2). The Cougars stretched their lead to 15-2 before the Gorillas scored seven times in the bottom of the fifth to trim the margin to 15-9. Pitt State added three runs in the seventh, and final, frame for the three run-margin.
Jacob Boylan went 3-for-5 with a double, a home run and five RBI for the Gorillas. Andrew Vogelbaugh also wnt 3-for-3 with three runs scored, a home run and two RBI.
In game two, USF jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the first before fighting off a Pitt State comeback bid. The Cougars stretched their margin to 7-3 after 2 1/2 innings, but the Gorillas rallied to tie the game, 8-8, in the seventh on Cole Brecheisen's solo home run.
The Cougars countered with two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth to take control, before settling for the 12-9 win.
Vogelbagh and Christian Arnold led the Pitt State offense with three hits apiece. Arnold doubled, homered and drove in three runs, while had a homer and two RBI. Brecheisen scored four runs.
