DURANT, Okla. -- The Pittsburg State softball team put up 13 runs on the way to two wins on Sunday (Feb. 7) to go undefeated in their opening weekend of play. The Gorillas defeated Southeastern Oklahoma, 7-0, and Oklahoma Christian, 6-1.
Against Southeastern Oklahoma, the Gorillas had fewer hits than the Storm, but used heads up baserunning to take advantage of four errors and five walks for the 7-0 win.Â
Katy Remy got the Gorilla offense started with a two-out double to left center in the top of the first. Nicole Nease reached on a throwing error that allowed Remy to score for the 1-0 lead.
The third inning brought four runs for Pitt State. Ashton Pratt drew a lead off walk, then stole second. With two outs, Nease and and Guthier drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. Alex Perez stepped up a knocked a grand slam to left for a 5-0 Gorilla lead.Â
The final two runs came in the top of the fourth. Pratt drew a one-out walk, her second of three on the game, Lawren McKinney reached on a throwing error and moved to second. With two outs another Storm error, this time by the left fielder on Nease's at bat brought both McKinney and Pratt home, resulting in the 7-0 win.
Morgan Myers pitched her first complete game shut out of the season. She gave up four hits and struck out four Storm batters. She did not give up a walk and is now 2-0 on the season.Â
The Gorillas used five hits and and error to score six runs in a 6-1 win over Oklahoma Christian in the final game of the weekend.Â
Five different players recorded the Gorilla hits. Pratt scored two runs and Katy Remy and Alex Perez each tallied two RBI.
Pitt State again started the scoring in the first inning. Pratt started the inning with a base hit to left. McKinney was again the benfactor of an error, moving Pratt all the way to third. With one out, Nease flew out to left for the RBI sacrifice fly.
Two more Gorilla runs came in the bottom of the second. With one out, Catie Cummins knocked a base hit to third. Following the second out, Pratt drew a walk. Cummins and Pratt executed a double steal to put them both in scoring position. McKinney added another walk to load the bases for Katy Remy. Remy took advantage with a two-RBI base hit to centerfield for a 3-0 Pitt State lead.Â
Neither team scored again until the fifth frame, when Pitt State put up three more runs on two hits. Remy was hit by pitch to lead off. With one out, Guthier reached on a fielder's choice that also left Remy safe at second. Both runners advanced on a passed ball. Perez added another extra base hit to her resume with w two-RBI double to center. Following a pitching change, Perez moved to thrid on a passed ball, then came home on Kris Van Hoosen double to center.
Oklahoma Christian scored its only run in the top of the sixth on a hit and a Pitt State error.
Emmie Robertson moved to 3-0 on the season as she struck out 12 batters. She walked three batters and hit one, while giving up three hits. The one run the team gave up was unearned.
Pitt State travels to Bentonville, Ark. next weekend (Feb. 12-14) for the 8-State Classic, hosted by Arkansas-Monticello. Pitt State is scheduled to face Upper Iowa at 9 a.m. Friday and Drury at 1 p.m. Saturday the team will take on Southern Nazarene at 11 a.m. and Henderson State at 1 p.m. Sunday brings Harding at 1 p.m. and Arkansas Tech at 3 p.m.
