Big Innings Propel Ichabods to 14-11 Win

PITTSBURG — The Washburn University baseball team capitalized on a pair of big offensive innings to claim a 14-11 victory over Pittsburg State University Monday (Mar. 21) in the final game of a three-game MIAA series.

The Ichabods (12-10, 7-5 MIAA) scored seven runs in the third inning to overcame an early 2-1 deficit against the Gorillas (6-15, 1-11 MIAA) and WU tacked on another four runs in the pivotal seventh inning to secure the victory.

Pitt State had narrowed its deficit to 9-6 by scoring a run in the third, a run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth, but WU added a run in the sixth and four more in the seventh to take control.

The Gorillas closed out the game with five runs in the bottom of the ninth thanks to a pair of Ichabods errors, a two-run triple by Andrew Vogelbaugh and a two-run home run by Christian Arnold.

Pitt State will return to action Tuesday (Mar. 22) when the Gorillas travel to Tahlequah, Okla., to face Northeastern State University in an MIAA game at 3 p.m. (CDT).
