PITTSBURG -- The Pitt State softball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Missouri Southern on Friday (March 4) evening at the PSU Softball Complex. The Gorillas won game one 11-4 and took game two 7-0.
Catie Cummins led the Pitt State offense with a 3-for-4 performance in game one. She had a double, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI. Sierra Hall, Katy Remy and Nicole Nease each had two hits. Nease led the team with three RBI. Kris Van Hoosen's only hit of the game was a two-run double. Jenna Bolton was 1-for-1 with three walks, two runs scored and an RBI.Â
Missouri Southern scored first in the top of the first, plating two runs on a hit, a walk, a hit batter and a Pitt State error. After the runs scored Gorilla pitcher Emmie Robertson settled down and struck out the last two batters of the inning.Â
The Lions held onto that lead until the bottom of the third. Pitt State loaded the bases with two walks and a Hall bunt single. Nease ripped a hit through the left side to score Pratt. Hall scored on a wilkd pitch to tie the game. Andie Cumbie came in to run for Nease at second. Kylie Guthier walked to load the bases. Following the first out of the inning, Bolton drew the bases loaded walk to give Pitt State the 3-2 advantage.Â
Pitt State tacked on two more run in the fourth. Pratt led off the inning with a walk and stole second. She moved to third on a Hall base hit and scored on a wild pitch that moved Pratt all the way to third. Remy added an RBI with an infield base hit to give Pitt State the 5-2 lead.Â
A lead off walk and two hits led to two more Missouri Southern runs in the top of the fifth, to narrow the Gorillas' lead to one at 5-4.Â
Bolton walked to lead off a four-run fifth for Pitt State. Cummins and Van Hoosen hit back-to-back doubles to make the score 7-4. Pratt walked and Hall reached on a fielder's choice that left all runners safe and the bases loaded. With one out, Nease dropped a base hit down the left field line to bring home two more runs.Â
The final two runs came in the bottom of the sixth on a Cummins two run homer.
Robertson improved to 9-1 on the season with the win. She struck out eight and walked four. Three of the four runs she gave up were earned.Â
Freshman pitcher Morgan Myers put together a great outing in game two, as the Gorilla offense fired on all cylinders with seven runs on eight hits.Â
Myers pitched the complete game shut out, giving up only three hits in the seven innings. She struck out three and walked one.Â
Pitt State's first two runs came on a Bolton home run in the second.Â
Neither team scored again until the fifth, this time the three run home run belonged to Nicole Nease.Â
The final two runs came in the bottom of the sixth. Perez led off the inning with a walk. Bolton hit a single down the left line and advanced to secon oin nthe throw, while Perez moved up to third. Van Hoosen walked to load the bases. With two outs, Hall dropped a two RBI base hit to left for the 7-0 score.
Pitt State will travel to Joplin tomorrow to face the Lions in a second doubleheader. Game one begins at 1 p.m.
