JOPLIN, Mo. – The Gorilla Softball team split shut outs with Missouri Southern in a non-conference doubleheader in Joplin on Saturday (March 5) afternoon. The Gorillas lost game one, 2-0, before taking game two, 6-0.
The Gorillas managed only three hits in the first game, compared to 10 for Missouri Southern. Sierra Hall and Jenna Bolton each had a base hit and Katy Remy added a double.
Missouri Southern scored one run in the third and one in the sixth for the win.
Emmie Robertson took the loss in the circle for only her second loss of the season. She fanned two batters and walked one in the loss.
Game two was a bit more productive for the Gorilla offense, as it out hit the Lions 7-5 and scored six runs off those seven hits.
Morgan Myers added another win in the circle to even her record at 4-4 on the year. She struck out four and walked four.
The Gorillas got on the board early. Ashton Pratt led off the game beating out an infield base hit. She stole second and moved to third on a wild pitch. Nicole Nease added a base hit through left side to score Pratt for the first run of the game.
Pitt State added two more runs in the second. With one out, Catie Cummins hit a double to left center, then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kris Van Hoosen drew a walk, she stole second and two Missouri Southern errors alloed both Cummins and Van Hoosen to score to make the game 3-0 in favor of the Gorillas.
Two more runs came in the third. Sierra Hall led off with a bunt single. She moved to second on a wild pitch. Katy Remy hit a base hit to left and moved to second on the throw to attempt to catch Hall advancing to third. Another wild pitch brough Hall home. Nease added another base hit up the middle to score Remy and put the Gorillas up 5-0.
The final run came in the seventh. Jordan Bradshaw drew a lead off walk. Sacrifice bunts by both Pratt and Hall moved her to third before a Remy base hit brought her home.
The Gorillas will play a midweek non-conference doubleheader against Truman State at 3 p.m. on Tuesday (March 8).
