Softball Wins One, Loses One in Opening Day of MIAA Tournament

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Pitt State softball team won its first MIAA Tournament game, 2-1, over Northeastern State, before falling to Missouri Western, 1-0, in nine innings. Pitt State will now face Central Missouri in an elimination game at 11 a.m. on the Stadium field.

All the runs in the tournament opener between Pitt State and Northeastern State were scored on errors. Pitt State also had the advantage of five hits to help them to the 2-1 win.
Northeastern State scored first in the top of the third as two Pitt State throwing errors on the same play allowed the RiverHawks runner to score from third.

Pitt State scored its two runs in the fourth. Katy Remy led off the inning with a base hit. She advanced to third on a base hit to right by Nicole Nease. Andi Cumbie came in to pinch run for Nease. Kylie Guthier reached on an error by the RiverHawk thirdbaseman, allowing Remy to score and tie the game at 1-1. With two outs and runners on first and third, Cumbie scored what would be the game-winning run as Catie Cummins reached on the second Northeastern State error of the inning.

Emmie Robertson earned the win in the circle. She walked six and struck out eight while only giving up three hits. The other first-team All-MIAA pitcher, Kayce Wooldridge took the loss to move to 21-10 on the season.

Game two was a much different game. Much like the meeting in St. Joseph two weeks ago, the Griffons and Gorillas battled scorelessly through regulation.

Robertson had much better control and struck out 11. She walked only three and only gave up two hits before the Griffons game-winning home run in the bottom of the ninth.

Prior to the ninth, the Gorilla defense did not allow a Missouri Western runner beyond second. Pitt State had bases loaded in each the sixth and seventh innings, but were not able to push a run across. The Gorillas tallied five hits in the game.

Missouri Western's designated player Taylor Hamilton hit a lead off, walk off home run in the bottom of the ninth for the win.
