PITTSBURG – The Pitt State softball team scored 19 runs on 22 hits, while surrendering only one run on eight hits in 11-0 (5 innings) and 8-1 wins over the Lincoln Blue Tigers on Sunday afternoon at the PSU Softball Complex.
The Gorillas improve to 32-9 on the season and 16-0 in MIAA play.
Katy Remy, Catie Cummins and Nicole Nease each had three hits for the Gorillas in the doubleheader. Each of Cummins three hits was a double as she was 3-for-6 with two runs and an RBI. Remy went 3-for-5 with two runs, a double, an RBI and two walks. Nease was 3-for-7 with three runs, five RBI and a home run. Myka Hayward, Sierra Hall, Kylie Guthier and Ashton Pratt each had two hits for the Gorillas.
Emmie Robertson earned the game one win in the pitching circle. She threw three innings and gave up only two hits, while striking out six batters before being relieved by Lynsey Conner. Conner threw the final two innings of the first game and did not give up a hit. She walked on and struck out two. Zoe Price went the distance in game two to improve her record to 3-1 on the season. She gave up one run on six hits. She fanned six Blue Tiger batters, while walking only one.
Pitt State scored its first run oon the day in the bottom of the first on a hit and an error.Â
The second inning was huge as the Gorillas batted around and plated eight runs on five hits and two Blue Tiger errors. In the inning, Cummins hit her first double of the day, Ashton Pratt added a triple and Nease and Guthier hit back-to-back home runs.
No one scored in the third, but Pitt State added two runs on three hits and an error in the bottom of the fourth. With two outs, Jenna Bolton started a rally with a base hit two left. Two wild pitches later she was standing on third to be able to come home on an error on a strikeout that left Alex perez safe at first. Cummins second double of the game, followed by a Kris Van Hoosen base hit brought Perez home for the final 11-0 score.Â
In game two, Lincoln scored first in the top of the first on three hits and a Pitt State error. The Gorillas answered to tie the game in the bottom of the innings as Sierra Hall scored from third on a Nease ground out.
Neither team scored again until the bottom of the fourth when Pitt State scored three more runs. With two outs, Hayward came in the game at DP and hit a double to center to score Nease. She then stole third and scored on a Cummins double to center. Cummins stole third and came home on a Tiara Ewy RBI base hit.Â
Three more runs came in for the Gorillas in their half of the fifth. With one out and Remy on second, Nease hit a base hit to center that brough Remy home. Guthier singled up the middle to drive Nease to third. A Bolton ground out moved Guthier into scoring position. Nease scored on a wild pitch and Guthier moved to third. Hayward added her second hit in as many at bats to score Guthier.
The final Gorilla run came in the sixth, as a Remy double plated Pratt for the 8-1 win.
Pitt State's next three games will get a little tougher. The team travels to Warrensburg, Mo. on Tuesday for a midweek doubleheader with Central Missouri at 3 and 5 p.m. On the weekend, the Gorillas travel to Northwest Missouri, currently third in the MIAA for a Friday doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m. before taking on Missouri Western, the MIAA's second-place team, at noon and 2 p.m.. on Saturday.
