Volleyball Adds Win Over East Central

EDMOND, Okla. – The Pitt State volleyball team added another tally mark in the win column on Saturday (September 17). The Gorillas defeated East Central, 3-2 (25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 21-25, 15-13)  in the final match of the GAC-MIAA Challenge. Earlier in the day, Pitt State lost to Southern Nazarene, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-20).

Pitt State hit .133 for the match and recorded 10 more kills, 58-48, than East Central. Maggie Highberger led the Gorillas with a season-high 19 kills. Peyton Walker added 17 and Zoey Qi, 11. Taylor Unke led the team in blocks with three block assists, while Noelle Dooley had two.

Ashlen Schwartz led the team with 19 digs. Taylor Wright added 18 and Lauren Maisberger recorded 17. Cal VanBuskirk earned a career-high 41 assists.

There were 10 ties in the first set and the Gorillas trailed for most of the set. The team went on a 4-0 run mid-set to take and 11-10 lead, its first since the first two points of the set. The two teams went back and forth until the final tie at 20-20, when back-to-back Tiger attack errors gave the Gorillas the 22-20 lead. Another Pitt State error scored the final East Central point. Highberger and Qi put down the final two kills for the first set win.

Set two was much the same, with Pitt State trailing until a couple small runs late in the set. A three-point run gave Pitt State a 19-18 lead, capped by a Walker kill. After a tying point by East Central Pitt State went on 6-0 run to take a 23-19 lead to win the match 25-19. 

The third set was tight again, but East Central hung on for the 25-22 win.

The Tigers led the whole way in set four, winning the set, 25-21, to send the match to a fifth set.

Pitt State jumped out to a quick 7-4 lead in the final set. East Central kept attempting to comeback, but the Gorillas didn't allow the Tigers to score more than one point at a time until the Tigers fought off match point four times to make the score 14-13 before Walker put down the match winning kill.

Against Southern Nazarene in the morning, Pitt State was hurt by errors. Qi and Highberger led the Gorillas with nine kills a piece. Ashlen Schwartz had nine digs and Taylor Wright added eight. Taylor Unke led the team in blocks with three.

Pitt State will begin MIAA play on Friday (September 23) at Lindenwood at 7 p.m.
