PITTSBURG — The Northwest Missouri State University baseball team overcame an early 1-0 deficit to claim a 7-2 victory over Pittsburg State University Saturday (Apr. 1) at Al Ortolani Field.
The Bearcats (19-10, 8-8 MIAA) scored twice in the third inning for a 2-1 lead on the Gorillas (12-21, 6-13 MIAA) and added a run in the fourth and two more in the sixth to build a 5-1 margin.
Joseph Hietpas (4-1) scattered six hits in 7 1/3 innings of work for the Bearcats, allowing just two earned runs and registering three strikeouts. Garrett Fort and Luke Hassman each collected three hits for Northwest and both players drove in a pair of runs.
Hunter Clanin went 2-for-4 with and RBI single in the first inning, while Colton Pogue had a run-scoring double in the Gorillas' half of the eighth inning.
The two teams will wrap up their three-game MIAA series with a final game at Noon Sunday.
