EDMOND, Okla. — Marquis Johnson hit a 3-pointer with one second remaining in regulation to lift the University of Central Oklahoma men's basketball team to a 91-88 victory over Pittsburg State University Thursday (Jan. 25) at Hamilton Field House.
The Bronchos (14-5, 7-3 MIAA) battled back from a six-point deficit, 81-75, with 6:06 to play in the game. UCO used an 8-0 run to turn the deficit into a two-point advantage, on a pair of free throws by Johnson with 4:06 to go.
Pitt State (12-8, 5-6 MIAA) took an 87-85 lead on Dietrich Cole, Jr.'s dunk with 2:29 to play in the game, but UCO countered with a three-point play by Jake Hammond with 2:01 to go to retake the lead, 88-87.
Jabari Antwine made one of two free throws to knot the score at 88-88 with 1:01 to play. UCO's Marqueese Grayson missed a 3-pointer with 37 seconds remaining, giving the Gorillas a chance to break the tie. Antwine missed a 3-pointer with eight seconds remaining to set up Johnson's game-winning shot for the Bronchos.
Grant Lozoya scored a season-high 24 points in the loss for the Gorillas, while Xavier Adams added 23 points and eight rebounds. Antwine chipped in with 13 points, while Demetrius Levarity finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Corbin Byford led five UCO players in double figures with 20 points.
