PUEBLO, Colo. — Hunter Clanin delivered a go-ahead two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to lift the Pittsburg State University baseball team to an eventual 3-2 victory over Colorado State University-Pueblo and salvage a split in a doubleheader Thursday (Feb. 8). The ThunderWolves scored a 13-12 walk-off victory over the Gorillas in game one.
Pitt State (2-3) and CSU-P (2-2) will complete there three-game series with a 2 p.m. (CST) game Friday.
Cody Whiting (1-0) pitched six strong innings to earn the win in the nightcap. He allowed two hits and one earned run, while recording seven strikeouts. Cody White recorded the final three outs, allowing one run and striking out two.
Colton Pogue started PSU's half of the seventh inning with a base hit off reliever Timmy Burtzloff (1-1). He advanced to second base when Dallas Reed reached on a fielding error. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch and Josh Whisler was walked with one out to load the bases.
Burtzloff fanned Cole Brecheisen for the second out of the inning but Clanin followed that with a two-run single to break a 1-1 tie.
In game one, Pitt State grabbed early leads of 3-0, 5-1 and 9-4 in the first three frames but CSU-P eventually pulled in front with a five-run seventh inning to take a 12-10 lead on the Gorillas.
Pitt State added runs in the top of the eighth and ninth frames to pull even at 12 apiece, but CSU-P's Zach Hoffman singled home Mason Krueger with the winning run to end the game.
Pogue paced the Gorillas' offensive attack by going 5-for-5 with four runs scored and three RBIs. Brecheisen and Joven Afenir had two hits apiece. Brecheisen drove in a pair of runs and Afenir scored three times.
