WARRENSBURG, Mo. — Cody White singled home Hunter Clanin with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh inning and then recorded the final five outs on the mound to help Pittsburg State University nail down a 4-2 win over the University of Nebraska-Kearney in opening round action of the 2018 MIAA Postseason Tournament Thursday (May 10).
The Gorillas (32-17), the tournament's No. 4 seed, advance to the winner's bracket to face eighth-seeded Northeastern State University at 7:30 p.m. Friday (May 11) at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field. The RiverHawks knocked off top-seeded University of Central Oklahoma, 4-1, earlier Thursday.
Clanin started the pivotal seventh inning by beating out a two-out infield single. Cole Brecheisen then drew a walk from UNK starter Josh Cooper (7-3) before White smacked a base hit to left field that plated Clanin.
Brad Kinsey (4-0) limited UNK (28-23) to six hits through seven innings before turning the game over to the Pitt State bullpen. Cort Lesmeister retired a batter before issuing a one-out walk in the top of the eighth, prompting Gorillas head coach Tom Myers to call on White for the extended save situation. White, who fanned a pair of Lopers among his five outs, tied the Pitt State single season record by recording his 11th save of the season.
Colton Pogue went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two walks in the contest. White paced the Gorillas' 13-hit attack with three hits, while Dallas Reed and Josh Whisler also added two hits apiece. Joven Afenir, Reed, White and Tyson Cushman accounted for Pitt State's four RBIs.
