Gorillas to Face SBU in Final Regular Season Series Friday/Saturday


PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team will travel to Bolivar, Mo., to wrap up regular season action with a three-game series against Southwest Baptist University starting Friday (May 4). The Gorillas and Bearcats will meet at 2 p.m. Friday and wrap up the series with a doubleheader Saturday (May 5) at Noon.

The weekend schedule has seen multiple updates due to anticipated weather conditions.

Pitt State enters the series with a 29-16 overall record and 21-12 mark in MIAA play. The Gorillas are fourth in the MIAA standings, trailing Northwest Missouri State University (29-18, 24-9), the University of Central Missouri (32-13, 23-10) and the University of Central Oklahoma (31-16, 23-10). SBU is 16-31 overall and 10-23 in MIAA play.

The Gorillas are fifth in the most recent NCAA Division II Central Region rankings released Wednesday (May 2). UCM (32-13), Southern Arkansas (31-15), Minnesota State (30-11) and UC) (31-16) occupy the top four spots in the poll. The top eight teams in the final regional rankings qualify for the NCAA Division II National Tournament.

Pitt State is batting .335 as a team and scoring 7.8 runs per game heading into the SBU series. Defensively, the Gorillas have a .966 fielding percentage and a 5.12 team ERA. The Gorillas rank second in the MIAA in batting average, runs scored and fielding percentage.

Junior designated hitter Reece Garvie (.398) and senior shortstop Colton Pogue (.378) ranks third and sixth, respectively, in the MIAA in batting average. Pogue is tied for third in the league in runs scored (50). He leads the Pitt State squad with 14 doubles and nine RBIs.
