ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- The Pittsburg State University football team rallied from a fourth quarter deficit and defeated Lindenwood University, 27-24, in overtime Saturday (Sept. 29) at Hunter Stadium.
Jared Vincent's 27-yard field goal in the extra session helped keep the 10th-ranked Gorillas (5-0, 5-0 MIAA) unbeaten, while the Lions (2-3, 2-3 MIAA) dropped their third straight home game of the season.
Quarterback John Roderique caught the game-tying touchdown pass from wide receiver Brenner Clemons with 2:05 remaining in regulation.
The Gorillas led 17-14 until LWU put together an eight-play, 64-yard scoring drive that was punctuated by Cade Brister's five-yard touchdown pass to Paul Silvio with 7:14 to play in the game.
LWU stretched its lead to 24-17 on Barrett Foley's 38-yard field goal with 5:07 remaining. The Lions capitalized on a Pitt State fumble to set up the scoring drive.
Roderique drove the Gorillas 56 yards in 14 plays on the game-tying series. He twice converted key third-down plays, running for six yards to move the chains and completing a 15-yard pass to Clemons on another play.
In overtime, LWU had to settle for a 46-yard field goal attempt by Foley that came up short. The Gorillas marched the ball down to the LWU 5 yard line before bringing in Vincent for the game-winning kick.
Roderique completed just six of 17 passes for 53 yards. B.J. Bradbury also completed seven of 14 passes for 75 yards and a touchdown and two interceptions. Bradbury carried the ball 21 times for 105 yards and a four-yard second quarter touchdowns. He tossed a 33-yard TD pass to Lorenzo West with 33 seconds to play in the first half as well.
Pitt State outgained LWU 423 yards to 298 yards, but the Lions capitalized on an 85-yard interception return for a touchdown by Drew Seers and an 87-yard touchdown scamper by Nash Sutherlin in the first half to stay in the contest.
Demetrius Bernard led the Pitt State defense with nine tackles and one of the Gorillas four quarterback sacks against Brister in the contest.
