PITTSBURG -- The Emporia State University women's basketball team forced No. 23 Pittsburg State University into 20 turnovers and the Lady Hornets capitalized for a 77-71 road win over the Gorillas Wednesday (Jan. 23) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.
ESU (13-5, 4-4 MIAA) broke open a 61-60 game with 6:51 to play in the fourth quarter by breaking loose for a 12-2 run to surge in front 73-63 with 3:28 remaining.
Pitt State (15-3, 7-2 MIAA) battled back to trim the margin to 73-71 on Athena Alvarado's layup with 1:38 to play, but the Lady Hornets forced a turnover and then got two free throws by Emily Miller with 50 ticks remaining for a 75-71 advantage.Â
Tyra Jones, who scored a game-high 22 points in the contest, made one of two free throws with 34 seconds remaining and Jones added a final free throw with 24 ticks to go.
Jones posted a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds in the contest. Addie Lackey added 14 points and Jessica Wayne added 12 points and eight steals.
Shelby Lopez and Alvarado paced the Gorillas with 16 points apiece, while Megan Scott came off the bench to contribute 12 points and seven rebounds.
