Ichabods Rally to Knock Off No. 23 Gorillas, 70-66


PITTSBURG -- The Washburn University women's basketball team erased a 10-point third quarter deficit to rally for a 70-66 road win over No. 23 Pittsburg State University Saturday (Jan. 26) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.

The Gorillas (15-4, 7-3 MIAA) led 50-40 with 1:33 to play in the third period, but the Ichabods (13-5, 8-1 MIAA) 17-6 over the next five minutes to take a 57-56 lead on a basket by Hunter Bentley with 5:54 to play in the game.

WU pushed its way to a four-point lead, 65-61, with 3:03 to go, but Pitt State battled back to trim the margin to one point, 67-66, on Megan Scott's layup with 35 seconds to go.

Alexis McAfee made a pair of free throws with 24.0 seconds remaining for a 69-66 Ichabods lead. Pitt State's Meghan Maher missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with 16 seconds to play and McAfee made one of two free throws with 15 ticks left to seal the win.

Reagan Phelan led all scorers with 18 points for Washburn, while Nicole Murugarren added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Pitt State got 14 points apiece from Shelby Lopez and Kaylee DaMitz. Scott added eight points and nine rebounds. Lopez eclipsed 1,000 career points in the game. She finished the contest with 1,004 points in 115 career games for the Gorillas.
