Ichabods Pull Ahead in Fourth Quarter for 49-38 Win


TOPEKA — The Washburn University football team scored 21 points in the fourth quarter to rally for a 49-38 victory over Pittsburg State University Saturday (Nov. 9) at Yager Stadium.

The Gorillas (5-5) took a 38-35 lead on Tyler Adkins' 33-yard touchdown run with 12:54 to play in the game, but Pitt State was unable to hold off Washburn (5-5) down the stretch.

The Ichabods took the lead, 42-38, on James Letcher Jr.'s 66-yard run with 7:23 to play in the game. WU took the lead one play after its defense held the Gorillas on downs at the WU 33 yard line. The Ichabods added an insurance score with 1:04 remaining in the game after Pitt State was held on downs at the PSU 28 with 3:19 to go.

Mak Sexton completed 15 of 32 passes for 262 yards and a touchdown for the Gorillas. He added a rushing touchdown as well. Adkins carried the ball 16 times for 147 yards and two scores, while Tucker Horak rushed six times for 88 yards. Pitt State starting quarterback Brandon Mlekus carried the ball four times for 26 yards and a TD before leaving the game with a foot injury in the first quarter.

Pitt State will wrap up the regular season schedule next Saturday (Nov. 16) with a home game against MIAA rival Missouri Southern State University.
