EMPORIA-The Pittsburg State University Gorillas Volleyball team was able to salvage one win on the weekend as they defeated the Emporia State Hornets in four sets on Saturday afternoon.
With the win the Gorillas improve to 13-14 overall and 8-10 in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). The Hornets fell to 7-19 overall and 3-14 in the MIAA.
The opening set saw the Gorillas fall behind by three to four point, despite the valiant effort by the Hornets to pull away, Pitt State rallied back and took the lead at 20-19. The lead was 22-20, but Emporia State battled back and took a 27-25 first set win.
The second set was all Pitt State as they doubled up Emporia 18-9 en route to the 25-19 win.
In the third set, the Gorillas trailed early but they rallied back and took a 19-18 lead. They ended up winning the set 25-21.
With the match on the line, the Hornets battled early but Pitt State nabbed the momentum and took the fourth set, 25-11.
The Gorillas were led by three players who had double digit kills, Claire Sandvid, Morgan Henning and Moyra Zulaica Casias, who each had ten.
The Gorillas will close out the regular season with two more road matches. Pitt State will travel to Fort Hays State on Friday, Nov. 15, and Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday, Nov. 16.
