Washburn Rallies Late to Knock Off Pitt State, 66-59


PITTSBURG — The Washburn University men's basketball team scored 11 of the game's final 14 points to rally for a 66-59 road win over Pittsburg State University Thursday (Dec. 5) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.

The Gorillas (4-3, 0-2 MIAA) led by 10 points, 47-37, with 15:27 to play in the game but couldn't hold off the Ichabods (4-3, 1-0 MIAA) down the stretch.

Pitt State's last lead, at 56-55, came on a driving basket by R.J. Lawrence with 5:17 remaining. WU scored on abasket by Connor Deffebaugh and back-to-back bucket by Jonny Clausing for a 61-56 edge with 3:12 to go. The Gorillas' Antonio Givens II made it a 61-58 game with 3:12 to go, but Pitt State didn't score again until the final half-minute of the contest on a free throw by Dejon Waters Jr.

Givens scored a season high 16 points on seven of nine shooting to lead the Gorillas. Waters added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Xavier Womack chipped in with six points and a game high 10 rebounds. Pitt State shot 39.6 percent from the field in the game, converting 21 of 53 shots.

Washburn placed four players in double figure scoring: Tyler Geiman (13), Drew Maschoff (11), Clausing (10) and Tyler Nelson (10). Clausing added nine rebounds and four blocked shots. The Ichabods shot 45.8 percent from the field (27-59).

Pitt State is idle until Dec. 18 when the Gorillas host non-conference foe Henderson State University.
