Achtermann Belts Pair of Grand Slams in 14-7 Win

PITTSBURG — Alex Achtermann belted a pair of grand slam home runs in consecutive innings as the Pittsburg State University baseball team overcame an early 4-0 deficit to defeat Colorado State University-Pueblo, 14-7, Sunday (Feb. 10) at Al Ortolani Field.

The Gorillas (4-2) completed the three-game series sweep of the Thunder Wolves (3-3) with the victory. Pitt State claimed 6-3 and 2-1 wins over CSU-P Saturday.

The Thunder Wolves capitalized on three Pitt State errors to plate four unearned runs and take a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning. Rion Santamaria delivered a two-run single as part of the Wolves big inning.

The Gorillas countered with a five-run bottom of the frame, highlighted by Achtermann driving a ball out to right field with the bases loaded.

After the Wolves knotted the score at 5-5 with a run in the top of the fourth inning, Achtermann punctuated a six-run frame with a second grand slam. Levi McLaughlin delivered an RBI single and Reece Garvie drew a bases loaded walk prior to Achtermann's shot.

Achtermann finished the game 2-for-4 with a walk and eight RBIs. McLaughlin added a two-run triple and went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs.

Dalton Weaver (1-0) earned the win in relief. Brendan Stanek worked three innings, surrendering four unearned runs, before giving way to Weaver. Weaver, Kyle Petty, Tanner Lane, Justin Root and Tyler McGrew combined to limit CSU-P to three runs over the final six innings, combining to register eight strikeouts.
