PITTSBURG--Â The Pittsburg State University softball team split a pair of games in their home opener Thursday (Feb. 14).
Rogers State University (7-4) defeated Pitt State (4-4), 8-2, in game one, before the Gorillas bounced back with a 9-6 decision in game two.
In game one, the Hillcats struck first plating three runs in the first to break the contest open early. The Gorillas recorded three hits as a team compared to twelve hits for the Hillcats.
Pitt State capitalized on a pair of one-run home runs by Mikayla Mahlo and Kaity Kukowski in the second game to hold off RSU. The Gorillas recorded 10 hits in the contest.
Shelby Smith (2-2) earned the win on five innings of work. Halle Brin pitched the final two innings of the game collecting four strikeouts.
Pitt State will return to action Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 16-17) when the Gorillas travel to East Central University.
