PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University women's basketball team broke open a tight game with a strong third period and pulled away for a 78-61 victory over Missouri Southern State University on Senior Day Saturday (Feb. 16) at John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court.
Pitt State (19-5, 11-4 MIAA) trailed 30-29 at halftime against MSSU (12-13, 4-11 MIAA) before the Gorillas outscored the Lady Lions, 23-14, in the pivotal third period.
Athena Alvarado and Maya Williams paced the Gorillas with 18 points apiece. Alvarado added a game-high eight rebounds and three blocked shots as well. Shelby Lopez added 12 points in her final home game for the Gorillas.
The Lady Lions got 17 points from Chasidee Owens and 16 points from Chelsey Henry.
Pitt State and MSSU will meet again Tuesday (Feb. 18) at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center in Joplin, Mo.
