Gorillas to Make Home Debut Against Thunder Wolves Saturday


PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team will make its home debut when the Gorillas open a three-game series against Colorado State University - Pueblo beginning Saturday (Feb. 9) at Al Ortolani Field. Pitt State will play a doubleheader against the Thunder Wolves at Noon (CST) Saturday, then wrap up the series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday (Feb. 10).

The Gorillas are 1-2 on the season following three games at the Edmond First Pitch Classic last last weekend at Edmond, Okla. The Gorillas dropped a 6-5 decision in 11 innings to Oklahoma Christian in the season opener on Feb. 1 and a 7-4 decision to Southwestern Oklahoma last Saturday (Feb. 2), before closing out the weekend action with an 8-7 walk-off win against Southeastern Oklahoma on Feb. 3.

CSU-Pueblo will bring a 3-0 record into the series with the Gorillas. The Thunder Wolves swept a three-game series against Adams State College, posting scores of 25-1, 15-7 and 21-7 against the Grizzlies.

As a team, Pitt State is hitting .243 and scoring 5.6 runs per game on the young season. The Gorillas have a 5.97 team ERA on the mound.

Senior catcher Caleb Cox has led the Pitt State offense to date. He has a team-leading .444 batting average with three runs scored, two home runs and four RBIs. Junior infielder Ty Herrenbruck also is batting .333 with three runs scored, two home runs and five RBIs.

Senior LHP Brad Kinsey (0-0, 6.75 ERA), senior RHP Brendan Stanek (0-0, 11.57 ERA) and senior RHP Alex Achtermann (0-0, 12.00 ERA) all made starts on the mound for the Gorillas during the opening weekend of action.

Due to construction and stadium renovations at Al Ortolani Field, Pittsburg State University will be unable to provide live statistics of the series against CSU-Pueblo.
