ST. LOUIS, Mo. — The Pittsburg State University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader against Maryville University Tuesday (Mar. 12). The Gorillas defeated the Saints, 12-8, in game one before MU countered to defeat Pitt Stae, 9-3, in game two.
The Gorillas (10-9) overcame an early 1-0 deficit in the opener by scoring two runs in the second, four runs in the third and three runs in the fourth inning.
Kala Holder led Pitt State's 15-hit offensive attack by going 4-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI. Kaity Kukowski belted a home run during a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Dru Collins scored three runs for the Gorillas.
Halle Brin (6-4) allowed six runs, two earned, in 6 1/3 innings of work. She walked two batters and registered four strikeouts.
The Saints (15-8) broke open a 3-3 game with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning in the nightcap.
Pitt State will return to action at Noon Wednesday (Mar. 13) when the Gorillas face McKendree University in a non-conference twinbill at Lebanon, Ill.
