PITTSBURG -- Tyson Cushman delivered a two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning to send the Pittsburg State University baseball team to a 5-3 victory over Baker University Wednesday (Mar. 20) at Al Ortolani Field.
The Gorillas (13-10) led 3-0 in the game before the visiting Wildcats (10-12) knotted the score with two runs in the sixth and another run in the eighth.
Pitt State opened its half of the eighth with consecutive base hits by John Oliver and Tyler Pittman off BU reliever Jace Johns (0-1). Pittman squared to bunt with a one-strike count but then slapped the ball into play, ricocheting off the leg of the Wildcats' charging third baseman Taylor Foss. Blain Ohlmeier sacrificed the runners to second and third base before Cushman delivered the game-winning hit off BU reliever Will Edwards.
Tanner Lane (2-2) retired the final six Wildcats to pick up the victory. Tyler McGrew limited Baker to two hits in 5.0 innings of work. He walked two batters and registered six strikeouts.
Cushman finished the game 2-for-5, while Alex Achtermann, Oliver, Pittman and Ohlmeier each had two hits in the game as well.
