PITTSBURG — The Newman University baseball team scored a pair of runs in the top of the 11th inning to claim an 8-6 victory over Pittsburg State University Wednesday (Mar. 6) at Al Ortolani Field.
The Jets (8-5) overcame a 6-2 deficit by scoring four runs in the top of the seventh to knot up the score.
The Gorillas (8-8) got a three-run home run from Chaz Burgess in the bottom of the third inning to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead. Pitt State added runs in the fourth and fifth frames.
Ty Herrenbruck and John Oliver added two hits apiece for the Gorillas. Levi McLaughlin scored a pair of runs.
NU's Garrett Hammond (1-0) limited Pitt State to one hit over the final 3 2/3 innings to earn the victory. He registered five strikeouts. Tanner Lane (0-2) took the loss in relief for the Gorillas.
Pitt State will travel to St. Charles, Mo., to open a three-game MIAA series Saturday through Monday (Mar. 9-11) against Lindenwood University.
