PITTSBURG — One day after splitting an MIAA doubleheader at Joplin, Mo., the Pittsburg State University and Missouri Southern State University softball teams split a non-conference twinbill Saturday (Mar. 9) at the PSU Softball Complex.
The Gorillas claimed a 7-4 victory in game one, before the Lions countered with a 13-8 win in the nightcap.
Pitt State (9-10) scored three runs in the first and three more in the third inning to take control early in the opener against MSSU (8-7). Alicia Lowery went 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run and five RBIs to lead the Gorillas. Dru Collins also went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored.
Halle Brin (5-4) allowed four runs, three earned, in 6 2/3 innings of work. She walked one and registered five strikeouts. Shelby Smith recorded the final out to earn the save.
In the nightcap, the Lions overcame a 3-2 deficit by scoring three runs in the third inning and adding six more runs in the fourth.
Mikayla Mahlo belted a grand slam home run in the bottom of the fourth inning for the Gorillas. Makenzie Goswick hit a solo home run and drew three walks, while Makayla Lamphier went 1-for-3 with a double, and two RBIs.
