Oliver's Blast Lifts Pitt State to 4-2 Victory

PITTSBURG — John Oliver delivered a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to propel the Pittsburg State University baseball team to a 4-2 victory over the University of Central Missouri Monday (Apr. 1) at Al Ortolani Field.

The Gorillas (14-15, 8-10 MIAA) snapped a five-game losing streak with the win and salvaged the final game of their three-game MIAA series against the Mules (20-10, 12-6 MIAA).

Oliver smacked his third home run of the season off UCM reliever Bryce Kearns after Mules starter Tyler Hasper (1-1) issued a pair of walks to start the sixth frame. The Gorillas trailed 2-1 prior to Oliver's eventual game-winning hit.

Alex Achtermann had two of Pitt State's five hits in the contest. Clint Allen delivered an RBI grounder that scored Caleb Cox with the Gorillas' first run of the game in the fourth inning.

UCM tallied single runs in the fifth and sixth frames against Pitt State starter Dante Richardson. Richardson allowed four hits and issued five walks in 5 2/3 innings on the hill. Justin Root (1-1) held the Mules hitless over 2 1/3 innings of relief work and Tanner Lane nailed down his second save of the season by recording the final three outs.

Pitt State will travel to Wichita Tuesday (Apr. 2) for a non-conference game against Newman University. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. (CDT).
