Gorillas Rally For 7-4 Victory Over Griffons

PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team plated four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally for a 7-4 victory over Pittsburg State University Friday (Apr. 19) at Al Ortolani Field.

The win helped the Gorillas improve to 22-18 overall and 14-12 in MIAA play, while the Griffons dropped to 18-16 overall (15-11 MIAA).

Pitt State and Western will wrap up the three-game series Saturday at Noon. The Gorillas will honor the squad's outgoing seniors prior to first pitch.

On Friday, the Gorillas broke loose for four runs on five hits in the decisive eighth frame after the Griffons limited Pitt State to three hits through the first seven innings.

Caleb Cox delivered the game-tying hit in the eighth. Chaz Burgess singled to open the frame and Greyson Pinkett reached on a fielding error on a sacrifice bunt attempt. Tyler Pittman then beat out a bunt single to lead the bases to set up Cox's RBI pinch hit off Western's Jacob Miller (1-3).

Pinkett scored on a passed ball and Blain Ohlmeier added an RBI single in the frame. Tyson Cushman closed out the Gorillas scoring with a run scoring grounder.

Justin Root (2-1) limited the Griffons to a pair of hits in 2.0 innings of relief work to earn the win. Tanner Lane recorded his seventh save of the season. Alex Achtermann was charged with four runs in 6.0 inning of work. He walked three and fanned four batters.

Achtermann went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Pinkett went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
