PITTSBURG -- Tyler Pitman hit a two-run triple in the top of the sixth inning to break a 3-3 tie and help lead the Pittsburg State University baseball team to a 9-4 victory over Missouri Southern State University Saturday (Apr. 27) at Warren Turner Field.
The Gorillas (25-18, 17-12) assumed sole possession of fifth place in the MIAA standings with the win while the Lions (29-16, 20-9) slipped into second place after suffering their second straight defeat.
Pitt State took a 6-4 lead to the ninth inning before tacking on four insurance runs in the final frame.
Caleb Cox went 3-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and two RBIs to lead the Pitt State offense. Ty Herrenbruck went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs.
Brad Kinsey (6-2) earned the win, allowing four runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 inning of work. He allowed three walks and fanned six batters. Dante Richardson held MSSU hitless in 1 2/3 innings of relief work and Tanner Lane notched his 10th save by recording the final six outs.
Pitt State and MSSU will wrap up the three-game MIAA series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.
