PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team will enjoy a busy weekend of action at Al Ortolani Field Friday and Saturday (Feb. 21-22) as Upper Iowa University and Truman State University come to town. There will be six total games – three on Friday and three on Saturday – will all three teams playing four times.
On Friday, UIU and Truman will meet at 10 a.m. Pitt State will then face UIU at 1 p.m. and Truman at 4 p.m. On Saturday, Truman and UIU will battle again at 10 a.m. with Pitt State closing out the day's action with a 1 p.m. game against Truman and a 4 p.m. game against UIU.
Pitt State enters the weekend action with a 4-6 record. The Gorillas took two of three games last weekend against the University of Minnesota Crookston. Truman is 2-5 on the young season, while UIU will make its season debut this weekend.
Through 10 games played, the Gorillas are batting .233 as a team and scoring 4.2 runs per game. Junior outfielder Blain Ohlmeier leads the squad and ranks second in the MIAA with a .444 batting average. He also leads the Gorillas in runs scored (8) and RBIs (6). Senior catcher Grayson Pinkett leads the team in doubles (7) and home runs (2) and shares the team RBIs lead with Ohlmeier.
On the mound, the Pitt State pitching staff has a 6.85 team ERA. Junior lefthanders Tanner Lane (1-1,5.68 ERA) and Chandler Mauldin (0-2, 5.68 ERA) and junior righthander Zach Curry (1-1, 12.46 ERA) each have made three starts on the season. Mauldin has 15 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings of work. Senior righthander Nick Brown has made four relief appearances with a 1-0 record and a 2.16 ERA.
